Meet Luella
My Roots
Food has always been how I remember people and places. Almost every recipe I make is tied to a memory—the big pot of beans my dad made every fall, his love for old-fashioned salt-risen bread, and the chocolate gravy Mom made for us using the exact recipe her Granny had made for her. Later on, when we were teenagers, my siblings and I would make that same sweet gravy on slow summer mornings before playing video games all afternoon.
Over the years, scratch cooking took on an even deeper meaning for me. After navigating some health challenges, I started looking for ways to truly nourish my body, which eventually led me to fresh-milled flours and whole ingredients. But on that health journey, I realized something important: to move forward, I had to go back to my roots.
Learning how to mill my own grains, ferment, preserve, and prepare food the way older generations did brought everything full circle. It turned out that the traditional, unhurried methods of the past were the exact things that helped me feel my best today. From regional Kentucky burgoo and holiday bourbon pie to warm loaves of fresh-milled bread and Sunday skillet dinners, this space is built on the meals we share with the people we love. That is what Luella’s Porch & Pantry is all about: comfort food that honors where we came from, nourishes our everyday lives, and brings us together around the table.
